New research by a team from the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) and the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC) in collaboration with Australian and New Zealander researchers has examined 5 years worth of satellite photos and determined that major cultural celebrations, such as Christmas, Lunar New Year, Diwali, and Ramadan, do cause observable peaks in light pollution. The authors of the study are calling for more regulation on outdoor lighting throughout the years with special emphasis on allowing for celebration without undue harm during these periods.
